Thailand 2015

Just back from Thailand.  Great trip.  I included about 100 photos in a slide show below - about 5 minutes.

It's 18 hours of flight to Bangkok.  It's 12 hours to Tokyo and another 6 hours to Bangkok plus add another 12 hours to your body clock as Bangkok is 12 hours ahead of NYC.

We landed and spent 12 hours in Bangkok to get Kyle and Justin a first fitting for bespoke suits and shirts at Raja's Tailors, while Sue did the same at Queens.  We then set sail for the island of Ko Samui where we stayed a few days at Tongsrai Bay. We made a brief and unexpected weather related stop in Phuket (for the sunset) in between.  Ko Samui has changed a bit since I first went there 20 years ago.  Massive party time!  Some stunning lady boys too.

After a few days of beach we flew up to Chiang Mai and checked out the city, Talat Ton Lam Yai, the city's main flower market the flower and the night action immediately around Talat Warorot.  The boys really learned haggling.

The following morning our guide met us and we headed out on mountain bikes towards Chiang Rai.  A couple highlights along the way include:

  • Bua Tong National Park (aka Sticky Waterfall - crazy limestone falls you can scramble up)
  • Royal Ping Resort (night 1)
  • Spelunking in massive cave system at Chiang Pao
  • Visiting various hill tribe villages (Lisu, Lahu, Mekin, etc) and buddhist wats
  • Baan Suan Mae Rim (night 2 in Fang).  Greenest pool ever and $10 hourlong Thai massages.
  • More caves at Tubtao
  • Huai Khum Resort (night 3 between Tha Ma Kaeng and Huai Sala)
  • Taking a long boat to a village around 25 km out of Chiang Rai where we doubled back to take a foot bridge over the Kok River to a dirt track, which we followed along the river for many miles
  • Elephant riding
  • Me hitting a truck and doing an endo about 2km from our finish.
  • White Temple - Wat Rong Khun
  • Black House - Baan Si Dum - Museo Baandum

There were some killer hills along the way as we followed the Kok River for last couple days. Somehow we had ascents after lunch each day so lunch kept getting longer!

We left Chiang Rai the evening we finished our ride.  We closed up the trip with a couple more days in Bangkok on the 30th floor of the Conrad Hotel, and managing a couple more fittings for the boys and Sue.  Meanwhile we were racing around in tuk tuks, visiting the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Dawn and Jim Thompson house, among others, while rocking up and down the Chao Phraya River and the canals in long boats.  New Year's Eve was capped with a fireworks display par excellence.

Enjoy the pics!
